- Immigration litigation focusing primarily on deportation defense for aliens with criminal convictions. Appear before various Immigration Courts, Board of Immigration Appeals and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Also perform family-based immigration services and naturalization assistance. Successes include Ortega-Mendez v. Gonzales, 450 F.3d 1010 (9th Cir. 2006). Practice is intentionally limited in size in order to allow better client service
- A subset of this practice is an immigration consultation practice collaboration between the Law Office of Christopher Todd and the Law Office of James F. Smith -- focusing on pre-plea advisory opinions for attorneys representing criminal aliens. Clients are defenders in private practice, most are appointed by county indigenous defense panels. We have held numerous presentations for defenders – public defenders and private counsel -- regarding the immigration consequences of California criminal convictions. Provide expert opinions – written and live -- in support of post-conviction efforts by defense counsel

UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic -- Supervising Attorney
August 2005 – June 2006
- Supervised the ongoing litigation efforts of the immigration detention section of the Immigration Law Clinic at the UC Davis School of Law. Managed approximately ten law students per semester. Successfully negotiated with US Attorneys in conjunction with habeas petition; prevailed at the Immigration Court on a variety of cases. Supervised responses to inquiries from detained low-income non-citizens; Supervised visitation and advice of hundreds of detainees at the county and federal correctional facilities; Supervised student responses to public defender inquiries regarding immigration consequences of convictions
